Gillian Smith's atelier is a place for all levels; from beginners to artists go there, which is a great inspiration. Gil gives attendees the right amount of attention and thinks with them on how to manifest their next creation. Once attendees have enough experience and want to be left alone to follow their own inspirations, that is OK too. Unlike most other studios, Gil has a large variety of glazes, many clay types and once a year she arranges a Raku firing day which is also an amazing experience. Attendees are from all 5 continents and all age groups, which adds to the pleasure of the experience. I highly recommend Art Ceramics Studio for your next creative experience.
The great thing about Gillian's classes is the variety of techniques taught in classes with students who are all working on their own creative pieces. It is always stimulating and challenging and such fun in a warm and inviting atmosphere, where we share ideas and enjoy each other's successes.
Gill has just moved to a lovely studio on the Lauriergracht which is fully equipped with different types of clay, glazes, mould-making materials, a kiln and spraying area. The people attending a mixture of ages, nationalities and abilities which gives the classes a very relaxed feel and both English and Dutch are spoken. If you are a beginner Gill will take you through various different processes such as coiling, pinching, slabbing, modeling, moulding-making & glazing and she has a good library of books for ideas and tips. If you need lots of help, Gill is there to give it, however if you are more experienced then you are left alone to get on with your latest project. I would highly recommend these classes as a great way to channel your creativity in clay with the opportunity to meet some lovely people at the same time!
Great classes in a cozy studio on the beautiful Lauriergracht! Gillian is a sweet lady and super teacher. I'm just a beginner in her class and have already learned skills to make some beautiful pieces. She takes the time to speak with every student, thinking through their ideas and making suggestions using her years of valuable experience. I definitely recommend taking a ceramics class here, no matter what your skill level.
