Riverfood

Riverfood is located in Leiden, Netherlands on Langegracht 70. Riverfood is rated 5 out of 5 in the category agricultural engineer in Netherlands. After completion of the study Marine Biology at the University of Groningen and a career of 13 years in education as Secondary School teacher in Biology Linda Grotenbreg realized she wanted to make a more concrete contribution in creating a more sustainable world. Linda decided to become an entrepreneur. The central problem for which she was trying to find a solution included the still growing world population and corresponding world food problems. Reading the book “Aquaponics Gardening” by Sylvia Bernstein provided her with ideas for possible solutions. Linda started experimenting with aquaponics at home and completed an education in Commercial Aquaponics given by Murray Hallam. From this the enterprise ‘Riverfood’ was born. Riverfood, founded in 2015 and based in Leiden, builds a future in which local, antibiotics- and pesticide free, nutritious food production is the norm and where at least 20% of city food consumption will be produced within the city, providing healthy food to everyone, everywhere using aquaponics and vertical farming. At Riverfood we show aquaponics: -can be used anywhere in the world as it does not rely on soil; -can be used both indoors as well as outside; -uses much less space than soil-bound farming especially when growing the plants in multiple (vertical) layers; -provides both edible fish as well as edible plants using only one input - fish food; -has plants growing either with sunlight or (solar powered) LED lighting; -provides nutritious food year round; -does not use any pesticides or antibiotics; -takes animal welfare and natural living conditions for the fish into account; reduces food-miles; -can improve the air quality and humidity indoors; -can provide healthy food for everyone, everywhere in the world.
