“New life from war’s destruction proclaims man’s immortality and hope for peace” Eight thousand two hundred and ninety one Americans found their final rest at this serene spot in the Netherlands. One thousand seven hundred and twenty two others are recorded missing from the period leading up to September 1944 when Germans troops used the nearby highway to withdraw from countries occupied for the four years leading up to that point. It is beyond touching to walk amongst my fellow veterans, myself about to return to a land they will never see again. Standing among visitors as the only English speaker in earshot it is humbling to see the appreciation shown for the memories of an allied force with no one knowing I’m the lone American and it’s my country they are respecting.

Closed, beats me why you would close a cemetery during a pandemic. Maybe a little bit over the top?

One of the essential experiences for an American traveling Europe, aside from all the native cultures, is to go see an American cemetery from the world wars. No picture or video of the iconic field of simple white crosses can possibly do justice to the enormity of the sacrifice that you realize when seeing them all laid before you in person. We came to visit a relative on the Wall of the Missing, and left feeling gratitude and pride at the dedication to their memories exhibited here. The grounds and structures are immaculate, and the staff is outstanding. Thank you again.

Military cemetary beautifully kept by the American Battle Monuments Commission to honour the brave US servicemen who paid their highest price fighting the nearby battle fields of World War II. Excellent information center directly near the cemetary. The yearly held Liberation Concert by the Southern Netherlands Philharmonic and choir is always a joy to visit.
