These nun’s were members of the Benguine order, which declares the name of the street where Romein is situated: “Bagijnestraat”. Later the building became a reformed church and in 1850 it was heavily reconstructed by Leeuwarden’s city architect Thomas Romein. This is also the person the podium is still named after. The building still looks like a church on the outside, the inside looks a bit more modern, with a small modern-looking bar, separate from the main hall. In the main hall you can still see the church benches on the sides, which gives Poppodium Romein a unique and cosy character.
