Sneek is one of those towns that will definitely make an impression on you. especially if you are a water sport fanatic, Sneek is the water sport capital of Friesland. It has approximately 33.000 inhabitants. The town has several beautiful canals and just like everyone else that visits, you will want to have your picture taken at the Watergate. We were on one day trip, came from Amsterdam and we rented our bikes in Stavoren and managed to make a super nice loop with a lunch stop in this beautiful town. This 17th century gate was part of a larger defensive system and has become the emblem of Sneek. The gate consists of two octagonal towers, with a bridge in between over the waterway between De Kolk and Stadsgracht at the city center, and a gatekeeper's house above the bridge. Sneek had four other water gates and two land gates, but all of which have been demolished.
