Lovely old fort but a bit messy. Perhaps a few more dustbins? Great historical insight into Leiden,as well as a beautiful lookout.

Nice piece of history, worthwhile for a visit...
What a lovely hystorical place to visit. It's a worthy to visit when you come to leiden
The English translations regarding the history of the building and surrounding buildings could be a lot more detailed. However, the tower offers some of the best views of the city. The alcoves on the inside of the structure offers a nice place to sit, chill and picnic.
You have not been to Leiden if you have not visited de Burcht. A visit is free when the gates are open, just make it part of a leisurely city walk. Make sure to go upstairs (during summer there is a path you can access from the Van der Sterrepad if you have a pram or a wheelchair, it is quite steep though so prepare for an adventure). The Burcht dates all the way back to the 11th century and the history shows when you are inside. If you can climb stairs, don't forget to go all the way up within de Burcht and walk around, there are some spectacular views of the city from there!
