Sarphati Monument
N/A
This fountain stands in tribute to Samuel Sarphati, an 19th century Dutch physician, politician and city planner in Amsterdam. He is honoured for his role in the initiation and planning of the city's waste transport in 1847, as well as introducing improvements in education and industrialization. The monument takes the form of a monopteros with a square roof tipped with a crown. Inside the colinade is a bust of Samuel Sarphati. The monopteros is surrounded situated inside a fountain shaped like a stylised star of David in reference to his religious background. The fountain stands in Sarphati park which was named for Sarphati himself. The park is some way off the tourist circuit in Amsterdam, but if you're around the De Pijp areas, the park is worth a detour and with it the fountain.
