Museum Kaap Skil Reviews | Rating 4.5 out of 5 stars (5 reviews)

Museum Kaap Skil is located in Oudeschild, Netherlands on Heemskerckstraat 9. Museum Kaap Skil is rated 4.5 out of 5 in the category heritage museum in Netherlands. Museum Kaap Skil is a versatile museum about Texel’s maritime history. In the broadest sense, Museum Kaap Skil is about life with, about, at and along the sea. There are exhibits about the fisheries, shipping, beachcombing and the importance of Texel during the Golden Age. In these days, Texel was an important hub for shipping. The Roads of Texel lay off the coast of Oudeschild, the largest anchorage in the world. These days come to life on and around the lifelike model, where 160 miniature ships give a good impression of what it looked like. In the exposition Underwater Archeology, hundreds of surfaced objects are displayed, originating from ships which sank centuries ago on the Roads of Texel. Buried under the sand, the shipwrecks and their cargo have been preserved. Become a volunteer Volunteers are very important for Kaap Skil. Thanks to them, the open-air museum bursts with activity. The millers, the smith, the ropemakers, fish smokers, net-makers, ship model builders, shop ladies and beachcombers keep the old crafts alive and share their knowledge and stories with the visitors. Specially trained museum guides give presentations, such as by the model of the Roads of Texel. Would you like to join our group of volunteers? Contact us via [email protected] or 0031-222-314956. This place deserves more than a few lines of review. There's a ton of things to see, from old stylish houses, to a barn full of beach collected items, to a windmill that was converted to make electricity on top of milling grain, a lot of information about VOC-era ships and things, artworks and creations by local artists, and a large exposition with found historical items. Lots of stuff for everyone!

So overall it's a pretty interesting indoor / open air museum. Your stay there will be arround 2-3 hours. Would I send people to visit, yes. There is only one negative point, to little on none at all explanations. Most of them are on Dutch, this would be a lot better if there were English and German too

#403DenHelder modern building beside some tourist shops in Oudeschild. Looks a little like opennlucht museum in de Veluwe so I didn't go in, but nice cafe for a quick coffee and a little break. #railthetrails
