Thorbeckeplein 30

Good for kids
This is a statue of 19th-century statesman Johan Rudolph Thorbecke that faces Herengracht at the south end of the square by the same name. The monument is the work of Dutch sculptor Ferdinand Leenhoff and was erected here in 1876. Here you see a middle aged Thorbecke dressed in stately attire. He clutches a rolled up manuscript in his left hand while his right rests upon a small pillar. The bronze figure stands upon a tall rectangular shaped pedestal with the gold inscription of his name in front. Beyond the statue is a tree lined square with restaurants on both sides. At the back of Thorbeckeplein, you'll find Rembrandtplein.

Johan Thorbecke was a Dutch statesman. In 1848, he drafted the revision of the Dutch Constitution giving less power to the king and more to the States general and guaranteeing more religious, personal and political freedom to the people. Unfortunately, where the statue is, is surrounded by tourist trap booze Cafés.
The great statesman Thorbecke is now at the entrance to a relatively seedy square with cheap football bars and other low level entertainment. Fortunately he is looking the other direction ....
This is the vantage point from which you can see all the 7 bridges in Amsterdam in one line. Most beautiful view when you are on the canal cruising yourself.
